The Contribution of Mathematics to Decision-Making: A Round Table Discussion at the MOAD24 Conference
摘要
In this report, we present the outcomes of the round table organized at the end of the MOAD24 conference. The main subject discussed is the contribution of mathematics to decision-making and its interaction with other sciences. A brief historical background of mathematical decision models was presented. It was highlighted that although the application scope of these models is enormous, they are limited when used in human sciences, and advanced and comprehensive models are needed to cope with real-world decision-making problems. One way to develop new more appropriate, effective, and efficient mathematical models for all sciences was discussed, interdisciplinary research and collaboration. The participants emphasized the importance of this approach in research. Report organization. This report is structured as follows. Section 1 presents the utility function- based decision-making model and its historical background. Next, the criticism of this model when applied to human sciences is discussed. Then artificial intelligence is discussed as a new tool for decision-making and ideas about what ought to be an adequate decision-making model are suggested. Section 2 discusses the interaction of mathematics and other sciences and interdisciplinary research and collaboration. Section 3 concludes the paper.
