Holographic Optical Elements for Application in Wound Healing Monitoring

Development of cost-effective, user friendly and readily accessible sensors for wound healing monitoring is needed to overcome growing global healthcare challenges associated with wound management. Such devices will extend basic healthcare to remote areas on earth and support long-term space missions by facilitating on-the-spot wound assessment. The fundamental biochemical processes associated with wound healing are typically related to parameters such as dissolved oxygen levels, pH, temperature, and lactate concentration. Real-time quantification of these parameters enables the assessment of local wound recovery and facilitates wound management. We present two sensor systems that utilise Holographic Optical Elements (HOEs) as promising options due to their diverse sensing capabilities, advantageous physical properties (e.g., lightweight and flexibility), and suitability for mass manufacturing. We present two types of HOEs—a holographic coupler for future use in dissolved oxygen sensing system and a holographic grating for use in a temperature sensor in the temperature range of 33–37 °C, relevant to wound healing.
