Automation has emerged as an integral part of modern living, with home automation gaining significant pace and usage due to advancements in smart devices coming into the market. From lights and fans to switches and coolers, automation has reduced inconvenience. However, this increase in appliance usage also increases the potential for hazards, particularly fire-related risks, which can lead to severe consequences. This unattended appliance-induced fire risk is hazardous for domestic safety as small mishaps have serious consequences. In this regard, the conventional system requires smarter alternatives as it lacks real-time monitoring and automated responses, creating the need for smarter solutions that can detect and mitigate risks proactively. This work introduces an IoT-enabled system for real-time fire detection and automatic appliance shutdown using Smart Switch Technology. Integrating multiple sensors with Arduino and NodeMCU monitors the appliances conditions and the environmental factors surrounding them. Smart algorithms process sensor data to identify anomalies, such as overheating or fire hazards, triggering an automated shut-off mechanism initiated via a smart plug. The system is integrated with the WiZ-connected app and the SmartThings platform to send real-time alerts and remotely monitor and control home appliances. During testing, the system could detect the overheating and smoke conditions properly and shut off the appliances at a breach of thresholds. Smooth integration with the SmartThings API ensured immediate action and correct user notifications. The proposed system is cost-effective and reliable in ensuring household and domestic safety.
