Bridges needing deep foundations usually use a group of piles to support and transfer the load to the ground below. Due to smaller diameters, these piles are easy to drill and provide better redundancy into the system. But these foundations take larger footprint and hence it is difficult to adopt group pile foundations in Marine Areas. Due to technological advancements, it is now feasible to drill larger diameter shafts (Monopile) as Bridge foundations. For Aesthetic reasons, Mumbai Coastal Road Project had contractual requirement to keep pile caps unexposed, i.e., under the seabed which makes construction difficult and time-consuming. Therefore, Monopile foundation system was introduced as a more sustainable solution for Marine Piers. As this marks the inaugural use of Monopile as a foundation system for highway bridges in India. The relevant design codes and construction specifications were not available and therefore a special Committee was setup by Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) to freeze the minimum technical requirements for Monopile. This paper will cover important aspects of Monopile design and construction experienced on Mumbai Coastal Road project and can serve as a reference for future projects in the country.
