Influential nodes, also known as influential spreaders (IS), are the important nodes in a network that are crucial to the dissemination of ideas, information, or illnesses. Nowadays, in a network where there are millions of nodes and edges, finding the most important ones becomes very crucial in case of fake news detection, viral marketing, rumor detection, etc. A number of survey papers have attempted categorizing the algorithms in a number of broader classes without distinguishing the specific techniques adopted by them. In this paper, a detailed overview of the different approaches used by different authors for predicting IS in different complex networks (CNs) has been provided in a methodological manner. In this article, the authors surveyed 41 papers in the last five years and presented a comprehensive survey of the status of the algorithms for identifying IS in CNs. Different approaches were discussed and a taxonomical classification was performed to include different subcategories including the different application area scenarios.
