Innovative Cropping Systems to Maximize the Use of Available Natural Resources
摘要
Innovative cropping systems can optimize land productivity and efficiency, thereby enhancing sustainability. Intercropping and crop sequencing are two strategies that can help in maintaining soil fertility and health. In this chapter, the benefits of implementing intensive cropping systems, such as changing cropping sequence and intercropping systems including legume crops, intercropping systems that can reduce shading stress, as well as the natural pests, were presented using results of field experiments previously conducted under the Egyptian conditions. Furthermore, evolutionary breeding can be used to develop crop varieties that are better adapted to changing environmental conditions, which can play a crucial role in crop intensification with enhanced resistance to environmental stresses. These types of practices can help farmers to improve yields, maximize the use of agricultural resources, prevent its deterioration, and increase food security in Egypt.
