The future for police institutions depends on navigating a MSM that is devoted to “hot button” issues that can shift quickly to the next button. While some issues may be significant and affect the outcome of an election, MSM declares its hollow promise that it “speaks truth to power”—while the NSW Police Force is sworn to defend both the truth and legitimate power. In addition, this research shows there has been a serious drift between MSM and the truth (measurable, observable details). This means we have a public that is untrusting of MSM and becoming cynical. In the ongoing MSM environment there needs to be a stronger communication of Peel’s Principles to the MSM, an education process, where the link between the principles, public safety and wellbeing—the common good—is powerful and compelling. Where the education system has failed to educate on the common good, those institutions formed to serve and protect are now relied upon to give instruction. This applies to all public institutions and those devoted to service.
