The MSM questioning of police legitimacy is driven often by its reliance on SM for content. The emphasis on “my truth” pursued on SM impels MSM to promote the activities of groups that seek the cancellation of institutions or individuals because MSM and SM are heavily reliant on each other. This research has found that the MSM in Australia is problematised and compromised through its weddedness to SM in reporting inaccuracies and exaggerations. MSM demonstrates a failure to understand Peel’s principles of policing thereby undermining policing as an institution and its task of maintaining a civil, safe society.
