Partial Replacement of Cement by Ceramic and Porcelain Waste in Concrete Interlocking Paving Block Production for Sustainability
摘要
Management of construction waste, reduction of CO2 emissions and reduction of energy consumption in cement production are some sustainability goals relevant to the construction industry in the present context. Various studies have highlighted the possibility of using ceramic and porcelain waste as a Supplementary Cementous Material (SCM) for concrete. Therefore, studying the possibility of adopting it for concrete interlocking paving blocks would be another initiative for achieving sustainability goals. Due to the desired characteristics of concrete interlocking paving blocks, it is widely used as a paving material in Sri Lanka. Therefore, this study is focused on studying the possibility of using ceramic and porcelain waste as a SCM for their production and identifying the optimum replacement percentages in this regard. According to the experimental study carried out in this regard relevant to strength class 3 of paving blocks, it was found that replacing cement with 15% of ceramic waste in powder form (by weight) as the optimum replacement percentage since further increment of replacement percentage would lead to dissatisfaction of strength of characterises as per local standard of interlocking paving blocks. It was further noted that especially the early age compressive strength of interlocking paving blocks reduced when it is used ceramic waste as a SCM even though it does not matter for the compliance of interlocking paving blocks for local standards.
