This chapter first traces the development of micro- and/or small-sized financing schemes in Vietnam, from the establishment of the country’s independent banking system in 1945 to the period following the Đổi Mới in 1986. It examines the provision of micro- and/or small-sized finance by a range of providers across both the formal and informal micro- and/or small-sized finance sectors. The chapter then discusses the various approaches to risk diversification employed within these schemes and explains why such approaches are insufficient to manage the risks presented by P2P lending.
