In this chapter, the novel class of two-dimensional materials known as MXenes has been explored, which has great potential in tribological applications. This chapter comprehensively elaborates on the fundamental aspects of MXenes, their synthesis methods, their properties and performance in tribological applications, and their lubrication and wear protection properties. Various characterization techniques to understand MXene properties are also discussed in this chapter. Apart from the structural and synthetic overview of MXene, the chapter also explores the basics of tribology and specific applications of MXenes in the improvement of tribological properties. Also, the surface analysis techniques and mechanical testing techniques that are vital to MXene performance evaluation are discussed. Present challenges, limitations, and research directions are discussed as a roadmap for advancing the field.
