In the latter part of the Western Zhou Dynasty, disorder plagued society in and out of the royal court as appointments were based on flattery-induced favoritism and governance became characterized by tyranny and corruption. During the latter part of the reign of the final Western Zhou ruler, King You, the marquis of Shen allied with the Quanrong people in taking the capital of Hao and overthrowing the dynasty. With the capital in demise, Kings Ping and Xie vied for the throne, making it even more difficult to reconstruct the Guanzhong region (where Hao was located) afterwards.
