Southeast Asian countries are highly motivated to develop their electric vehicle battery industries, driven by significant geological potential in essential raw materials. However, critical mineral assessments for ASEAN nations are sparse. In particular, previous studies on mineral criticality have mostly focused on global trends, with limited attention to the competition among countries, regional dynamics, or localization within the supply chain. This chapter seeks to address this gap by estimating the criticality levels of cobalt, manganese, copper, iron, graphite, bauxite, nickel, and lithium specifically in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The chapter developed a method for estimating raw material criticality that focuses on two main indicators: economic importance and supply risk. This chapter outlines several policy recommendations to enhance mineral resource management, reduce import dependency, and strengthen the electric vehicle battery supply chain in ASEAN.

摘要
