Aromatic π–π Interactions in Self-assembled Nanostructured Materials

Studying the self-organization in organic molecules has gained attention over the years owing to the possibility of versatility in the design criteria. Fine-tuning their self-organization by internal design or external environmental conditions offers a wide possibility of their implementation in various disciplines, such as medicinal chemistry and molecular electronics. Crucial factors that determine the process of self-assembly, are the shape and physical properties, which in turn are governed by the non-covalent interactions. Hence, understanding the role and mechanism of non-covalent interactions at the structural and molecular level is critical to designing novel supramolecular nanoassembly. Among the operative non-covalent interactions, incorporating aromatic π–π stacking in the design can facilitate the self-assembly process resulting in materials with novel electronic, optical, and mechanical properties derived from π-conjugated systems. This compilation is an attempt to comprehensively catalog the advancements in fabricating nanostructures directed by aromatic π–π interactions.
