Analysis of Occurrence of Myofascial Pain Syndrome Among Chronic Nonspecific Neck Pain Patients—A Literature Review

In daily life, one of the most common complaints made by many people is chronic, non-specific neck pain. Additionally, due to being associated with disability and a lower quality of life, pain in the neck has been shown in young adults to be a risk factor for a decrease in total work productivity. It is recognized as a socioeconomic and medical burden and one of the frequent reasons behind job absenteeism (Jahre et al. in BMC Musculoskel Disord 21(1):366, 2020 [1]). One of the most common non-articular musculoskeletal pain syndromes and a major contributor to chronic neck pain is MPS (Myofascial Pain Syndrome). Physical examination reveals the existence of specific trigger points (MTrPs) in MPS patients (Tang et al. in Medicine (Baltimore) 102(12):e33347, 2023 [2]). A trigger point is a sore spot inside a tense muscle band that gets triggered by a lot of strain, tension, loading, or compression. Patients who are experiencing chronic neck pain are most likely to have MTrPs in the upper trapezius as well as infraspinatus muscles (Ribeiro et al. in BMC Musculoskel Disord 19(1):252, 2018 [3]). Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) case reports have been discovered in patients with persistent, nonspecific neck pain in recent years. MTrP in palpably taut bands of the skeletal muscle is indicative of MPS, a regional pain syndrome which could cause distant motor as well as autonomic effects which additionally referring pain at a considerable distance. The main goal was to determine whether MPS was common in participants with persistent, nonspecific pain in the neck region. Similarly, an enlarged cervical disk may also be the reason for upper extremity referral pain that is mistaken for MPS. The manifestation of motor, sensory, and autonomic symptoms brought on by MTrPs is known as MPS. An extensive literature search was performed from the year 2004 to 2024 to create a comprehensive narrative regarding the presence of MPS among chronic nonspecific neck pain patients. To do this, search for key terms such as chronic nonspecific neck pain, MPS, and MTrP in PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINHAL, Ovid, and Google Scholar. Five electronic databases—MEDLINE, PubMed, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and Cochrane—were searched in order to find literature. Full-text articles published between 2004 and 2024 were included; four of these studies were featured in this review of the literature. Results. Data synthesis was carried out using the Centre of Evidence-Based Medicine (CEBM) for the selected studies. The findings of the current research were diverse. Four out of the 69 original articles met the criterion for inclusion and were eligible to be considered for the review. Excluding case studies, the papers were varied from systematic reviews through RCTs. A total of 4 systematic reviews were used to describe the review research. There was no evidence of study overlap in systematic reviews. Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (CEBM) was used to check the articles which were selected for the level of evidence. Using the tool two studies were rated as 1a, and four studies as 1b, as per CEBM levels of indication.
