This article reports on an analysis looking at the effects of taking on board the challenges posed by the environmental sustainability of renovation among managers of craft construction companies. The sustainability of renovation can be understood in terms of a triptych integrating building emissions, the embodied energy of the materials used and the productive act. In order to identify the effects of this integration, we compared the productive configurations and functioning of 3 craft companies according to their consideration of the environmental sustainability of production. The results show that the integration of sustainability can take several forms. In its less ambitious form, the consequences are marginal and have little impact on work and productive configuration. But in the more ambitious case, this integration causes a significant change which requires the entrepreneur to rethink both their work practices (general understanding and intervention on the building, use of unprocessed materials) and the characteristics of their productive configuration. The change then appears as a “professional transition” that has an impact on the economic viability of the company and the durability of the entrepreneur’s work.
