From a definition of collaborative activity based on three principles - equality, co-construction and mutual respect - we explore its underlying values and compatibility with two prevalent phenomena in design situations involving: institutionalized hierarchy and socio-cognitive conflict. We identify barriers to knowledge elaboration and sharing and discuss ways to overcome them. Examples of case studies are given to illustrate these issues.
