Evaluation of a Fast, Portable Anthropometry System for Clothed Measurements

Three-dimensional (3D) anthropometry has revolutionized the measurement of body dimensions to characterize populations, providing critical reference data for various applications, including military applications such as uniform or personal protective equipment design. However, typical 3D anthropometry systems require subjects to change into tight-fitting garments, and a manual landmarking process in software may be necessary to facilitate measurements. Moreover, the outputs of these systems are often not consistent with standard measurement definitions such as those in the US Army Anthropometric Survey, ANSUR from 1988 and 2012. PassFit™, a portable 3D anthropometry system, was developed to provide offers a more efficient and practical way to obtain standard body dimensions that are extensively used across US military applications. The current system trained on military data generates 136 ANSUR-equivalent dimensions in five seconds from a lightly clothed individual using two depth cameras and custom software. This study presents the usability and reliability of the system as an effective tool for characterizing populations based on laboratory studies and field deployments.
