International Students’ Perceptions of Cultural Adaptation and Academic Curriculum: Charting the Path Towards Inclusiveness in Higher Education
摘要
When studying abroad, international students frequently face obstacles linked to cultural adaptation and academic curricula. The purpose of this study is to explore Moroccan students’ attitudes about cultural adaptation and academic curricula. Data were collected via a web-based questionnaire shared with Moroccan students carrying on their studies in international institutions abroad. The study attempted to discover any obstacles that international students from Morocco encounter when adapting to cultural differences in their host countries, as well as their perspectives on the academic program. Data analysis was conducted based on the Acculturation Model (Berry, 1980) and the intercultural sensitivity model (Bennett, 1986). With a few exceptions, the data demonstrated that the majority of participants had not experienced major challenges with cultural adaptation. However, the participants suggested some strategies that may be implemented to improve their stay in the host nations, such as offering language classes, organizing cultural activities, and integrating cross cultural communication into the different educational programs offered by the host countries. The findings revealed that universities should create culturally sensitive learning environments that cater to the needs of international students. Concerning the academic curriculum, results showed that the majority of participants expressed their satisfaction with the academic courses and programs provided by their institutions. Some participants, however, felt the differences in the teaching styles and evaluation systems compared to those adopted in Morocco. Overall, the study emphasizes the necessity of encouraging cultural interchange and providing assistance to international students as they adapt to the culture of their host countries. Furthermore, it highlights the need of universities providing assistance and support to international students regarding academic curricula differences. The findings of the study might be used by universities to design policies and initiatives to foster the internationalization of higher education for improving international students’ experiences in the host countries.
