As the world grapples with numerous environmental challenges, including waste management and the growing need for sustainable energy sources, innovative methods are being developed to convert biowaste into valuable energy. Biowaste, an organic waste material derived from food scraps, agricultural waste, and animal dung, is generated in vast quantities. If managed effectively, this waste can be transformed into a renewable energy source, contributing to a more sustainable future. Traditionally, biowaste is disposed of in landfills, where its decomposition releases methane—a potent greenhouse gas. However, instead of allowing methane emissions to contribute to climate change, this gas can be captured and utilized for various energy applications. By converting waste into energy, we can significantly reduce landfill usage, lower environmental pollution, and promote sustainable waste management practices. Several methods exist for converting biowaste into energy, with the most used techniques being anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis, and biodiesel production. Anaerobic digestion involves breaking down organic material in the absence of oxygen to produce biogas, which can be used for electricity and heat generation. Pyrolysis is a thermal decomposition process that converts organic waste into bio-oil, syngas, and charcoal, while biodiesel production transforms organic fats and oils into a renewable alternative to fossil fuels. To promote the large-scale adoption of bio-waste-to-energy solutions, the government regulatory authorities have implemented various policies and initiatives. These policies aim to reduce waste generation, enhance waste-to-energy conversion processes, and strengthen renewable energy infrastructure. Additionally, they provide financial incentives, subsidies, and technological support to encourage industries, businesses, and individuals to adopt sustainable waste management and energy production practices. The primary objective of this chapter is to explore sustainable ways of converting organic waste into useful renewable energy while highlighting the policies introduced by regulatory authorities to facilitate this transition. By supporting and promoting such initiatives, society can move toward an eco-friendlier and resource-efficient future, ensuring that waste is not merely discarded but utilized as a valuable energy source.
