Women’s reproductive mental health is an integral aspect of maternal health. In the context of Nepal, the prevalence of mental health issues like depression, anxiety, suicide, and substance use is high among maternal population with limited available services. The mental health problems among this group are further exacerbated by factors like gender-based violence, economic dependency, and socio-cultural pressures. Nepal’s healthcare system faces challenges in integrating mental health services into maternal care. Most mental health services are concentrated in urban centers, with no specialized professionals in reproductive or perinatal psychiatry. The stigma, lack of trained professionals, and inadequate screening and intervention mechanisms pose major challenges. In this chapter, we aim to explore the epidemiology of mental health disorders, suicide, and domestic violence among the maternal population of Nepal. We also aim to discuss the current scenario, challenges, and ways out for women’s reproductive psychiatry in Nepal.
