Health and Safety Aspects of Nanoparticle Production at Industrial Scale: An Overview

The industrial-scale production of nanomaterials (NMs) presents significant health and safety challenges due to their unique properties, which can lead to adverse biological interactions. Engineered NMs, designed with specific characteristics, pose occupational hazards primarily through inhalation, dermal contact, and ingestion routes. Inhalation is specifically concerning as it may cause respiratory issues such as inflammation and fibrosis. The lack of comprehensive data on human exposure effects necessitates rigorous risk assessment and management strategies. To mitigate these risks, assessment of the process lifecycle of NMs is crucial to define the most relevant hierarchical method for hazard control, consistent with regulatory standards: elimination or substitution with safer materials when possible, engineering controls like ventilation systems equipped with HEPA filters, administrative controls such as good hygiene practices, and personal protective equipment as a last resort. Occupational exposure limits (OELs) have been established for some NMs but remain largely undefined for many others. Control banding strategies offer an alternative risk management tool when OELs are unavailable. Regulatory frameworks are evolving but face challenges due to the rapid advancement in nanotechnology. The prevention through design (PtD) approach emphasizes integrating safety considerations early in the product design phase to reduce risks proactively. This proactive strategy not only enhances the safety of stakeholders but also contributes to more efficient production processes. Continuous monitoring through occupational health surveillance programs further supports maintaining safe working conditions. As nanoparticle production expands globally, prioritizing health and safety measures will be essential for sustainable growth in the sector. In conclusion, ensuring safe nanoparticle production involves ongoing research into toxicity mechanisms, developing robust regulatory standards, and adhering to stringent safety protocols. This chapter provides an overview of current health and safety management principles associated with NM production at an industrial scale while highlighting regulatory directions for safer manufacturing practices.
