In mid-June 2018, after returning from a conference in Seoul, South Korea, I received a large envelope that contained a response to my application for doctoral study. It read, “Congratulations, you have been accepted into the Graduate School of International Relations, Doctoral Program at Ritsumeikan University, as a scholarship recipient.” It was wonderful news; my first international journey as a migrant began.
