This chapter presents the author’s personal, chronological account—as Director of a Confucius Institute—of the political storm sparked by the Conservative Party’s efforts to close Confucius Institutes between 2022 and 2023. It explores how the controversy began, the rationale behind the legal avenues pursued to ban Confucius Institutes, and the Confucius Institute community’s initial response, including the author’s preparation of a contingency plan and efforts to finalize a long-pending agreement. The chapter also traces the rapidly shifting political landscape in Westminster—from Boris Johnson to the rise and fall of Liz Truss, followed by Rishi Sunak and his eventual withdrawal of the pledge to close Confucius Institutes—highlighting how the issue became a focal point in leadership contests. It also reflects on the lasting legacies and aftermath of this political storm. The chapter concludes with a brief account of the author’s work during a relatively less challenging period between mid-2023 and 2025, accompanied by his parting thoughts on stepping down from the role of director.
