This chapter continues the author’s chronological reflection as Director of the Confucius Institute, focusing on the period from mid-2020 to the end of 2021. While the Institute remained preoccupied with navigating the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the most pivotal developments in its history quietly unfolded: the sudden and largely unanticipated announcement of the closure of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, which soon made international headlines. Positioned at the center of this turbulence, the chapter examines this moment in depth—tracing the early signs, capturing the initial reactions and concerns of Confucius Institutes, and detailing the transition to a new funding and governance structure for the Institutes. This external disruption unexpectedly brought the UK Confucius Institute community closer together, fostering mutual support and collaboration. Amidst these developments, and partly in response to the closure of the headquarters, the author travelled to China—despite the highly inconvenient timing—to support the evolving needs of both the Institute and the university. What began as a challenging and unexpectedly extended stay ultimately proved to be a transformative and rewarding experience.
