It explains the author’s decision to directly confront and refute the widespread allegations surrounding Confucius Institutes—at a time when much of the Confucius Institute community has remained notably silent. The chapter also traces the author’s personal journey to becoming a Confucius Institute director, highlighting the intellectual passion, educational background, and career path that led him to the role. It introduces the distinctive perspective that shapes this book, informed by the author’s four intersecting identities: a Chinese national, a UK director, a manager, and a scholar of politics. At times, these identities give rise to external misunderstandings and conflicting expectations—tensions that this book seeks to unpack with honesty and critical reflection.
