Conversations centered on rural sustainability and rural resilience have global importance. A wide literature engages these ideas, ranging from policy initiatives and project-based strategies, to case studies from across the globe. Community engagement inherently involves partnerships between communities and potentially universities, government entities, or public or private not-for-profit institutions or organizations for the purpose of generating strategies for addressing the highly complex and tightly linked social-economic-environmental challenges facing many rural communities. In this chapter, we build on this literature arguing that community engagement principles and strategies can play an essential role in developing place-specific rural community resilience. We draw on the growing academic and professional literature and key examples of engaged processes in the United States to highlight principles, approaches and real-world examples that illustrate how community engaged strategies can be utilized as a means of promoting resilience in rural communities. We highlight successful practices for building community capacity and fostering socially equitable relationships amongst groups with highly diverse interests using a commonly utilized community engagement model that can be adapted to a range of situations. The multiplicity of challenges facing rural communities today requires new, multi-scalar, inclusive, community driven solutions—community engaged partnerships can be one strategy for building rural resilience.
