Transforming Circular Urban Resources: Sustainable Approaches for Smart City
摘要
Circular economy’s approaches are widely embraced across various sectors to promote sustainable ecosystems and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This chapter especially investigates the potential of implementing circular economy principles in the management of advanced smart cities. For this reason, an analysis of literature is conducted on four key areas including energy, transportation, buildings, and waste management. After conducting thorough research on the literature several approaches have been found for transforming the current management system of smart cities into a circular economy system. It is highlighted that employing renewable energy resources has a significant role in energy generation for not only reducing the carbon emissions but also overall energy demand. A unique transformation of transportation system that prioritize sustainability is emphasized in the literature to determine the future of urban mobility. Additionally, building management mechanism is suggested to incorporate circular initiatives for enhancing their environmental performance. Additionally, the most efficient strategies for reducing and managing the waste are provided for implementing the circular economy effectively across urban areas. The chapter offers implications for fostering sustainable cities such as placing special emphasis on activities responsible for emitting greenhouse gases, which are substantially contributing to the rise in global temperature. These implications could help inform a balanced decision-making process regarding the promotion of clean energy in cities, rather than focusing solely on achieving the best outcome for a single objective within the framework of sustainability's triple bottom line.
