Progress in Weaving Technology in Context of Sustainability

The advances in weaving technology and their integration with sustainability practices along environmental, economic, and social dimensions are reviewed in this chapter. The basics of weaving are presented at the beginning of this chapter, including the complex processes of yarn preparation, the different types of looms that can be used, and the basic motions necessary to produce fabrics. The chapter also addresses diverse aspects of sustainability regarding weaving: energy and water consumption, carbon and water footprints, waste management, with the addition of new innovative technologies that could play a significant role in these fields advanced prototyping machines, automation for efficient production, and sustainable sizing processes. Relatively new near-net-shape weaving is discussed as a game-changing strategy for reducing textile production waste in applications like fashion, footwear, composites, and medical textiles. Issues of social sustainability, like fair labour practices and transparent supply chains, are emphasized as key to meeting the growing consumer demand for ethical products. Weaving technology development moves forward by the introduction of energy-efficient systems, recyclable materials, and automation for sustainable practice. Finally, the chapter concludes by addressing important challenges and needing an interdisciplinary approach toward reaching sustainability in weaving.
