It emphasizes that by removing obstacles and generating opportunities, OCB reflects as an act of generosity and compassion, similar to constructing bridges for others at the workplace. In order to show how caring cultures that promote compassion and teamwork maximize employee potential, this chapter compares toxic and supportive work environment scenarios as well. It traces the development of OCB from its initial conceptions to Dennis Organ's formalization. The chapter highlights the developmental milestones of OCB and highlights how ideas like informal collaboration and cooperation served as its foundation. It examines many facets of OCB, including compliance, civic virtue, sportsmanship, and altruism and compliance. The chapter lays a strong basis for comprehending OCB and its crucial role in organizational productivity and effectiveness by combining various research and historical viewpoints, laying the groundwork for its exploration in human services organizations.
