Future Trends and Innovations
摘要
This chapter discusses trends and innovations in green biorefinery solutions that promise to revolutionize the concept of waste management, resource recovery, and sustainable production. It is divided into three main areas: advancing the green biorefinery technologies and process optimization; integration of artificial intelligence, and data analytics, in the transformation of biowastes; and the expected trends regarding resource recovery. One would note a focus on converting biodegradable waste streams into the production of more biobased products utilizing advanced fermentation, enzymatic conversion, and thermochemical methods: process optimization with modular systems and circular economy principles that can further emphasize resource efficiency and environmental considerations. This has transformed the nature of operations, rendering operations leaner and adaptive as applications of AI and machine learning enable optimization of biorefinery, real-time data-driven decision-making, predictive maintenance, and modeling a virtual biorefinery. The discussion extends into developing bio-based materials and multi-feedstock biorefineries while valoriating byproducts to emerge with new products: such as bioplastics, specialty chemicals, and bioenergy. This includes also an integration with carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technologies to further explore its role in reducing CO2 emissions. By focusing on industrial symbiosis and eco-industrial parks, the authors demonstrate the resource-sharing network as an important element toward sustainability. In summary, these innovations point to an imperative that collaboration, constant improvement, and a focus on circular bioeconomy are going to be vital for making society more resilient and sustainable.
