Microplastics are one of the most relevant environmental problems of our lifetime, being a threat to all kinds of living forms. Their diffuse sources, complex transport, and accumulation processes are still not well understood. Human activities are the sole source of microplastics, and complex processes determine their fate in the environment. Knowing that different human actions generate microplastics, in this chapter, the following questions are explored: What are the most microplastic-generating human activities, particularly those related to personal choices? What does personal choice mean from a microplastic-generation perspective? What are the areas where personal choice and public policies intertwine? This chapter analyses the realm of sources and paths from personal choices, usually linked to consumption, and the interlinks between personal choices and systemic configuration that enhances microplastics’ input into the environment. The areas and potential generations and paths are analyzed qualitatively, and some measures that might have an impact on generation, input, and remediation from the individual perspective are proposed. This chapter closes with a general discussion about the need to conceptualize solutions in terms of public policies, a science-driven public discussion, and the acknowledgment that collective effort towards plastics pollution is the way forward.
