This chapter delves into the perceptions of illness and health, particularly in the context of the caste-based occupation of the Hadis. The Hadis, a Scheduled Caste (SCs) or Dalits, are traditionally engaged in manual scavenging. The research argues that perceptions of illness and health are significantly influenced by factors such as household preferences, the nature and severity of illness, and the potential treatment costs. These factors, in turn, shape the choices made in health care centres. While the primary focus is on understanding the Hadis’ perception of illness and health, the thesis also provides an ethnographic description of their jobs and how the community’s nomenclature has evolved to ‘sweeper’.
