This chapter describes three community initiatives in Germany that utilize local natural resources in markedly different ways. These initiatives involve the maintenance of alpine pastures for eco-tourism in Bad Hindelang, the management of a school forest for environmental education in Templin, and community-based power generation using renewable energies in Schönau im Schwarzwald. The origins, activities, direct and indirect outputs as well as the challenges of each initiative were depicted. Common success factors of these initiatives, such as the choice of a location-based approach or the use of extensive and integrative information campaigns, were identified in the concluding section.
