This book chapter explores the last 30 years of the Asian People’s Theatre development in Hong Kong, featuring insights from interviews conducted by David Lui and Wilson Yeung with renowned Asian theatre directors, practitioners, and educators, who are set to participate in the 2025 Asian People’s Theatre Festival in Nepal. The narrative underscores the pivotal role of the Asian People’s Theatre Festival Society (APTFS) since its establishment in 1994, and its impact on People’s Theatre and cultural dialogue across Hong Kong and Asia. The chapter illustrates how APTFS harnessed the performing arts to democratize theatre, fostering diverse community engagement and empowerment through expressive workshops. Inspired by global educational theatre practices, the organization’s innovative methodologies have significantly enriched Hong Kong’s artistic scene.
