Lipedema is a complex and often misunderstood adipose disorder characterized by the pathological accumulation of fat, primarily in the lower extremities, leading to pain, swelling, and mobility issues. Defined by its symmetrical distribution across both legs, sparing the feet and hands, lipedema predominantly affects women and can significantly impact their quality of life. Despite its distinct clinical presentation, the condition remains underdiagnosed, partly due to a lack of awareness within the medical community and the common misattribution of symptoms to obesity or lymphedema. The epidemiology of lipedema suggests a substantial prevalence among the female population, with varying estimates suggesting that a significant percentage may be affected worldwide.
