In 2008, the authors introduced the concept of HPV-related diseases, encompassing conditions caused by HPV infection, such as cutaneous warts, genital warts, Bowenoid papulosis, and squamous intraepithelial lesions. Early detection and proactive treatment of HPV-related diseases can help eliminate HPV infection and prevent HPV-associated tumors. Unlike traditional “spot clearing” treatments such as CO2 lasers, cryotherapy, and wart surgery, 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) provides an “area clearing” effect by precisely targeting the application of ALA and light. This approach enables the diagnosis and treatment of subclinical and latent infections that may surround warts or lesions. ALA-PDT effectively removes skin lesions with minimal side effects, high safety, low recurrence rates, and minimal scarring, preserving organ structure and function. Additionally, by refining the mechanism and parameters of ALA-PDT, the treatment has been optimized to reduce the drug concentration, lessen adverse reactions, and lower treatment costs. These findings offer valuable data to guide the standardized implementation and enhancement of ALA-PDT for HPV-related diseases in clinical practice.
