Human-centered design offers an approach to focus on the needs, capabilities and behaviours of users in order to design contextually relevant solutions that are desirable by users, technically feasible and financially viable. The Indian Railways (IR) carries over 24 million people every day across its expansive network. However, current designs of railway coaches on the IR network do not cater to needs of children, potentially compromising their safety and comfort, and causing discomfort to their parents or caregivers. This pilot study used a human-centered-design process involving field-observations, and questionnaires-to-parents to uncover latent needs of children-and-parents. This was followed by a collaborative design workshop to co-create design concepts that offer greater flexibility, privacy, comfort and safety for children-and-parents traveling in long-distance sleeper coaches on the IR network. An interdisciplinary team of railway personnel, design professionals and design students ideated a range of design solutions. One of the unique solutions that came up was a Flexible Baby Pod (FBP) designed for mothers traveling with infants and toddlers. The FBP can be provided as an add-on to a sleeper berth inside the railway coach and can be set-up one station before a passenger’s boarding station. The FBP has been detailed out as a concept; it needs to be prototyped and field tested to validate the idea. The study offers a novel approach to amplify the voices of children-and-parents in designing inclusive train travel experiences. Future studies will expand on user touch points beyond the experience of the train coach.
