The aim of this research is to develop traditional footwear “selop” (bustong) innovation for Javanese traditional attire, specifically Gagrag Yogyakarta. This research using an empathic approach in the design thinking me. Design thinking is a design methodology for addressing problems by understanding human needs. Researchers conducted observations and interviews with several individuals using a qualitative approach with semi-structured interview guidelines regarding complaints, behaviors, and preferences about using traditional selop, and needs that can support mobility and product comfort. The prototype results were technically and preferentially tested with samples of civil servants (ASN), employees, and students in Yogyakarta, as well as ergonomics and cultural experts. Some of the study results include data on the number of sample respondents, respondent identities. Aside from that respondents’ habits of wearing selop or not, types of shoes commonly used, reasons for not wearing selop, and selection beyond the recommended selop designs. Selection process of selop designs most prefer based on three recommended designs: design A, design B, and design C, with design descriptions. Design C was chosen by 75% of the respondents because aesthetically pleasing, well-executed, and non-slip bottom was highlighted as a significant advantage, enhancing safety and stability. Additionally, the design includes a heel height of approximately 3–5 cm, which provides both comfort and a slight elevation that many users find desirable.
