This paper presents a preliminary investigation into the modelling of Collective Intelligence (CI) within Medical Co-Design (MCD) processes. Leveraging foundational principles of co-design and established CI frameworks, we propose a qualitative model that identifies eight critical elements—six internal and two external—essential for understanding the structure and evolution of MCD through a CI perspective. The study addresses the increasing complexity and knowledge barriers in medical design by exploring how MCD, as a collaborative effort involving designers, doctors, and stakeholders, harnesses CI to tackle intricate design challenges. Initial findings suggest that MCD leverages CI to transcend individual capabilities, providing a macro-level understanding of its structure. This research lays the groundwork for future quantitative and qualitative analyses, offering a multi-dimensional view of collaborative design in medical contexts.
