This study explores the principles of human movement stereotypes related to the design of control/display, highlighting the need for a theoretical foundation. Since Loveless’s seminal review, several principles have been established, including Warrick’s principle, the Scale-side principle, and the Visual Field principle, guiding the intuitive alignment of control actions with human expectations. These principles are important for ensuring that users can predictably respond to display deviations, thereby enhancing the usability and safety of control/display systems. However, this study identifies a significant theoretical gap in why these stereotypes and expectancies exist. This study also points out the lack of strong theoretical explanations for most principles. The text emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary research in ergonomics, psychology, engineering, and neuroscience to develop a comprehensive theoretical framework. This framework could explain existing design stereotypes and pave the way for innovative control/display systems that cater to universal human intuition. This would reduce the reliance on extensive user testing and standardize design practices globally.
