This study focuses on laparoscopic surgery training, where the adaptation of hand movements and visual information is important. The study investigates whether the effectiveness of training in an MR environment using pass-through display on HMDs translates to real-world environments. The experiment involved five days of laparoscopic surgery training under three different conditions. The first condition did not use an HMD and relied on direct visual observation. The second condition used an HMD with a pass-through display, which superimposed endoscopic images onto the real-life environment. The third condition also used a pass-through display, but the image was displayed close to the participant’s hand. In each of the five training sessions, the degree of skill improvement and adaptability were compared by measuring task completion time. The result demonstrated the effectiveness of training in an MR environment and presented considerations for MR in skill acquisition. It was shown that the utilization of MR for training requires careful consideration of user adaptability, such as familiarity and proficiency, and a careful examination of environment design.
