This paper examines the competencies outlined by professional bodies in two closely related domains: Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE) and Workplace Safety and Health (WSH). The review reveals a 60% overlap in the knowledge requirements shared by both disciplines. Two critical distinctions emerge. First, HFE places a strong emphasis on cultivating scientific leadership, while WSH prioritizes safety leadership. Second, the WSH framework introduces additional vocational competencies absent from the HFE domain. Both frameworks exhibit a gap in addressing critical core skills essential for our dynamic and evolving economy. Consequently, the recommendation advocates for the integration of these core skills into the training and educational programs for professionals in both HFE and WSH, as well as collaboration between HFE and WSH professionals, emphasizing safety research. By combining the scientific rigor of HFE with the application-driven focus of WSH, research can yield insights that are both theoretically sound and practically relevant. This study offers insights for curriculum development and hiring practices, emphasizing the imperative of bridging the theoretical-practical divide in these fields.
