In this work, the drowned who have died at the hands of others have been thought of as located and dispersed entities once imbued with personhood and as figures with ongoing ontological salience. They are entangled in diverse, including elemental, geographies. Being the drowned is both a biological reality and a signification of systemic oppression, silencing, absenting, and abjection. On that understanding, the study is both an intellectual and unapologetically an emotional response to such deaths, which reveal inequities spanning from our cells to the planet. Finishing it has helped me galvanize ideas and advance a new inquiry.
