This chapter explores the values and outlook on life in Chinese culture, positing that values ought to be inherently linked to the outlook on life. The Chinese outlook on life is characterized by its emphasis on interconnectedness, continuity, and mutual dependence. Distinct from Western individualism and Indian concepts of reincarnation, Chinese philosophy conceptualizes life as an unbroken chain that connects ancestors, descendants, and all living beings within an organic whole. This life perspective fosters group-oriented values, wherein duties and obligations take precedence over individual rights. Consequently, an individual’s existence is defined by reverence for ancestors, care for future generations, and harmony with nature. At the core of this moral system lies the cultivation of the mind—a faculty that governs behavior and requires refinement to preserve its inherent purity. Chinese culture thus advocates aligning one’s actions with the well-being of past generations, future heirs, and contemporary society, embodying a holistic humanism that balances moral self-discipline with cosmic harmony.
