Durability Investigation of EAFS Aggregate Concrete Immersed in Hydrochloric Acid and Sulfuric Acid Solution
摘要
Sustainability plays a significant role and concern in today’s construction industry. EAF slag is a waste material of steel industries with a broad scope of utilization in concrete to make concrete cleaner and greener. Our previous research studied the mechanical properties of M-50 grade concrete with EAF slag aggregate with an optimum 50% EAF slag replacement to natural aggregate. In our current research, we have analyzed the durability aspect of concrete, particularly during exposure to acidic environments, which may be due to various factors like groundwater, the atmosphere. To overcome this issue, use an acidic solution of HCl and H2SO4, then immerse the 28 days aged concrete specimen wholly submerged for a period of 90 days to maintain the concentration and pH by adding solution and observing its behavior in terms of change in mass and compressive strength. EAFS coarse aggregate concrete mixes exposure of HCl has a mass loss of around 1.9–3.07%, and loss in compressive strength is 3.72–16.25%, which is low as compared to exposure of H2SO4 mass loss of 4.21–6.36% and compressive strength loss of 45.05–54.66%. H2SO4 causes more damage to the concrete internal matrix than HCl exposure to an acidic solution.
