The construction industry, including tunneling projects, is entering the next generation to boost the demand for intelligent development. The goal of intelligent construction, which extends to tunneling engineering, is to deliver automatic, smart, reliable, and sustainable construction engineering products and services by leveraging emerging information technologies (Zhang et al. in Eng Appl Artif Intell 137, 2024 [1]). Applications of intelligent construction are gaining more attention and becoming increasingly extensive with the purpose of maximizing the potential value in full-lifecycle project management. To capture the valuable opportunities of intelligent construction, this chapter summarizes the body of critical knowledge concerning the theoretical, methodological, and technological advancements.
