Umbilicals are essential systems employed in launch vehicles for varying servicing requirements such as pneumatic, propellant, electrical, data acquisition, or environmental conditioning. Different types of umbilicals are employed in various launch vehicles worldwide. An earth storable (ambient) umbilical was designed for meeting the servicing requirements in one of Indian Space Research Organizations’ launch vehicles. Umbilical systems consist of several sub-systems which interface with launch vehicles and launch pad systems. The development of such a complex system warranted the systems engineering approach for seamless product induction. Systems engineering outlays methodologies for developing complex systems with optimal time, manpower, and budget utilization. This article explains the development of ambient umbilical from systems engineering perspective. Each development phase is explained in detail.

摘要
