Importance and Quality Criteria of Building Visualization—Literature Review

The digitalization of the construction industry, particularly through the implementation of Building Information Modelling (BIM), has led to a notable increase in the creation of accurate digital building visualizations. These visualizations are of paramount importance in the planning, communication, and decision-making processes that occur throughout the construction process. Despite the importance of visualizations in construction, there is a dearth of established methodologies for assessing their quality. This raises critical questions about the factors that contribute to visualizations’ quality and how it can be objectively evaluated. This publication presents the preliminary findings from the BIM-LoVE research project, which aims to develop a systematic approach for describing and assessing the quality of digital building visualizations. The data were gathered through a literature research process involving analysis and classification. The study highlights the objective and subjective aspects of visualizations, which are influenced by context and viewer perception. The results demonstrate that specific factors and criteria are important in defining the quality of visualizations, which are particularly effective in supporting various decision-making scenarios, underscoring their essential role in project success. This paper seeks to establish a comprehensive system for evaluating visualization quality, with the aim of enhancing standards and practices within the construction industry.
