Various paratransit modes are prevalent in urban areas, influenced by the diverse needs and characteristics of commuters. In developing countries, the absence of adequate public transportation is commonly observed in medium-sized cities, leading many urban residents to rely on paratransit for their daily travel, especially within central business district (CBD) areas. Paratransit modes are often favored due to their affordability and convenience, effectively filling the gap left by public transport systems. Among these, e-rickshaws have recently gained prominence in urban areas of developing nations. Their appeal lies in their affordability and eco-friendly nature, making them a potential replacement for traditional fossil fuel-based paratransit vehicles. This study focuses on assessing the utility of E-Rickshaws and understanding commuter preferences in medium-sized cities where public transportation is inadequate. The research was conducted along the CBD corridor of Silchar, a medium-sized city in India. A commuter survey was carried out using questionnaires targeting users of various transport modes along the selected corridor. The utility of E-Rickshaws was analyzed using a binary logit model, and the statistical validity of the models was confirmed through various goodness-of-fit tests. Sensitivity analysis was also performed to identify the factors that most significantly influence the choice of E-Rickshaws. The study presents key findings and policy recommendations, offering valuable insights into the role of E-Rickshaws in achieving sustainable transportation in medium-sized cities. These findings highlight the potential of E-Rickshaws to serve as a viable, eco-friendly mode of transport in urban areas where public transportation options are limited.
